London: Tho. Newborough, John Nicholson, and Benj. Tooke, 1704. Third Edition Hardback. Very Good condition. The book that helped create the popular image of the pirate, written by a surgeon who sailed among the buccaneers. Third edition of The History of the Bucaniers of America, and the Second edition of A Journal of a Voyage Made into the South Sea, By the Bucaniers or Freebooters of America. From the Year 1684 to 1689.

First published in 1678, Exquemelin’s history records the lives and attacks of l’Olonnais, Roche Brasiliano, Bartholomew the Portuguese, Sir Henry Morgan and their companions. It describes their ships and weapons, their agreements and division of spoils, their attacks on Spanish America, and the torture and killing not nowadays associated with the romantic idea of a pirate. This 1704 edition extends Exquemelin’s account into a collective history of the age of the pirates. The final section contains Raveneau de Lussan’s book of the French freebooters who sailed between from Guayaquil towards Acapulco from 1684 to 1689, together with Etienne de Montauban’s African narrative.

Same printers / publishers for both, the former having three separately paginated parts in one physical volume. 15 folding engraved portraits, plates and maps, woodcut profiles and full-page engraved maps within text. Bound in full calf. Some rubbing and chipping to the leather, hinges starting to split a little to the exterior. An armorial Rolle bookplate and the bookplate of Adrian Bullock at the front, contemporary name Rob. Walter on the title page. Some worm holes to the rear.
