A fantastic book examining the interplay of superstition and rationalism, examining the historic prevelance of superstition aswell as contemporary cases. The book seems to take a harsh stance against the superstition of previous centuries, whilst allowing for a readjusted superstition in the guise of modern religion. The chapters examine superstitions in general with titles such as 'On Changelings', 'Of the Goat, as the Witches' Palfrey,' and 'Of the Mandragora.' Being an 1851 it fits neatly into the timeline of occultism with Scott's Witchcraft and Demonoloy a couple of decades prior and Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia being formed the following decade. Half-bound calf with marbled board, and marbled edges. A well done rebacking, with some rubbing, board edges rubbed. Internally neat with a 1937 ownership inscription on the front pastedown.
