(b.1922 d.1995)

A poet and novelist who had the ability to be satirical and inventive whilst remaining thoroughly readable. His bibliography ranges from comic fiction to political pam-phlets, and from poetry to studies of science fiction. His first novel, Lucky Jim, is a seminal work of the 1950s. He was knighted in 1991.
