Aldiss is best known for his science fiction novels, which push the genre to the limits of convention. Billion Year Spree is considered a landmark history of science fiction, successfully arguing that the field's first important work was Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. His mainstream novel Life in the West was selected by Anthony Burgess as one of the 99 best novels published in England since 1945.
