Visit the forums for a chat, join a group or create your own or maybe just comment on the latest news. Make friends at the Community, and send them a message. Visit our growing reference library or subscribe to view our 600 price guides. Or do a bit of buying and selling at the marketplace.
The Main Menu
Home
We select the most interesting articles and news stories to appear on the front page. This is limited to ten articles and provides easy access to the most important updates. There is a news ticker at the top of the page with the most recent article entries scrolling every 15 seconds.
About Hyraxia
This is the page you're currently reading.
Further Information
For those who are interested, this is series of short articles outlining the history and association of the site. Significant contributors to the site will have their own page here, and premium sponsors will have a page here. There are also details of the workings of the site such as article guidelines, seller guides and subscription information.
News and Features
An eclectic mix of articles from various sources. Occasionally we will hunt down a collector, publisher, dealer or author and arrange a short interview. The idea is that this section will be regularly updated and contain the latest news for the collector. A series of quizzes, news from Hyraxia itself and also a number of series of articles covering a plethora of topics.
Special Guest Features
These are articles written by our readers and others. They are generally experts in the field or devoted collectors and give a valuable insight into the nuances of collecting.
Bookride
Thanks to our kind friends at www.bookride.com, we have extra content from one of the best resources on the web. Each episode from this blog provides an excellent insight into the world of books and collecting.
Five Dials
Five Dials is an excellent literary journal published monthly by Hamish Hamilton. Although not about collecting books it does provide a nice aside to the rest of the site and makes for a satisfying read.
Car Boot Tales
Car Boot Tales is the anonymous musings of a book collector, who never really cared for first editions or signatures.
Features
The features written by Hyraxia's staff and may include collecting guides, details of individual books, interviews or anything that doesn't fit anywhere else really
New Collectibles
The New Collectibles series is an attempt to keep a finger on the pulse of book collecting and establish what is currently gaining strength in the market. Generally newer books are found here, but we will cover older books as they pick up.
Whatever Happened To...
This series is the antithesis to the above, it looks at books that have dropped in value or collectibility. As with New Collectibles, this is obviously just a studied estimate - we make no guarantees. And always make sure you check the date on the article - things do change fast...occasionally.
Antiquarian Spotlight
This is a study of some of the older dealers out there...ahem, I do apologise, it's nothing of the sort...It's an examination into authors from an age past or books from yore, or more precisely, books and authors first published prior to 1900.
What's Hot on eBay
This looks at items on eBay that are getting a lot of attention or at least should be. It used to be easy to find a thousand bargains on eBay, but with the site's demise it's becoming increasingly hard to find good, priced books. Here we try to readdress that somewhat.
Book Collecting News
The news section covers reports from across the world, we scour the media, the blogosphere and the marketplaces to bring you all the book-collecting stories out there. It is our intention to include news from booksellers here too, however large or small.
Auction Reports
We try to keep on top of the many sales that go on throughout the world. Primarily focusing on Bloomsbury Auctions, National Book Auctions and Swann Galleries we try to give a rounded view and what's coming up that's interesting and what sold well.
The Quiz Pages
This is just for fun, sometimes we'll have prizes, sometimes it's just for you to whittle away the days at work.
Site News
This is a blog of things specific to Hyraxia, whether it be new features, new series or new sellers at the shop.
The Price Guides
This is currently our largest section and contains over 600 articles. All articles are subject to the scrutiny of the members via comments at the bottom. These comments are moderated, but if you disagree with a price or find that we've missed a book of an article, then this is the place to discuss it. The articles are arranged in sub-sections as follows:
Authors
Each article in the authors section contains a brief biography of an author followed by a comprehensive bibliography and price guide. The majority of the articles in here are provided in partnership with the Tartarus Press, publishers of the renowned and authoritative Guide to First Edition Prices. For more information, and exclusive offers on the latest printed edition of the guide see the Tartarus Press section.
Illustrators
As above only this section is dedicated to the greatest book illustrators, from Arthur Rackham to Edward Dulac.
Publishers
Many collectors look for books by a single publisher or within a single series, the Collins Crime Club, for example, or the Folio Society.
Prize-Winners
The articles here examine the world's most renowned prizes, and the values of books associated with them.
Price Guides
This is a section for our subscribers and simply cuts out the intro pages and goes straight to the price guides.
The Reference Section
The reference section is for those readers who wish to know a little bit more. Again, this section merits a number of sub-sections:
Publisher Details
Hyraxia aims to provide here short biographies of all publishers, both currently active and long since disbanded, amalgamated or faded to obscurity.
Bibliographic References
Details on websites, books, journals and other articles relating to book collecting, whether it be details of Daniel Levack's exceptional chronicling of Philip K Dick's work or a link to a database of the works of John Le Carré.
Book Anatomy
A one-stop guide to all your book-related questions, whether it be to understand the difference between a book graded good and one graded very good or to find out exactly what 8vo means. A great place to start if you're new to the addiction.
Links
As are most people nowadays, we're regularly out on the web and when we see something interesting we add a link here so you can have a look too. Of course if you want you link here, please do so and they'll appear straight away - keep it relevant though.
Search
The title says it all, in-depth searches can be performed here.
